Henry-Senachwine School District #5 - Master Facility Planning Update

May 28, 2024

At the May 15th Henry-Senachwine CUSD #5 Board of Education meeting, representatives from BCA Architects, Ltd. and Midwest Construction Professionals provided the District with an update on preliminary facility renovations, high school building addition options, and associated costs. At the meeting, the District was able to view a preliminary plan of a two-story high school addition and renovations at both Henry-Senachwine High School and Henry-Senachwine Grade & Junior High School.

The preliminary plan for renovations and a two-story high school addition at Henry-Senachwine High School includes preliminary costs totaling $22.3 million. The $22.3 million estimate includes a building addition estimate of $16.8 million, an auditorium and stage renovation of $1.2 million, and remaining estimated costs of renovations/improvements to the kitchen, cafeteria, roofs, music rooms, locker rooms, industrial arts/shop area, and the addition of a bus drive.

The preliminary plan for renovations at Henry-Senachwine Grade and Junior High School includes estimated costs totaling $14.8 million. The $14.8 million estimate includes a new gym/locker room addition estimate of $5.8 million, interior renovation work estimated at $3.5 million, roofing projects estimated at $1.6 million, and renovations of bathrooms and teacher workroom estimated at $1.1 million. Remaining estimated costs of renovations/improvements include parking lot repair, playground relocation, new lockers, classroom casework/cubbies, domestic water piping replacement, open health/life safety work, and open maintenance study work.

Henry-Senachwine School District’s current statutory debt limit/borrowing is approximately $18 million. Given that the preliminary costs of the facility work are estimated to be $22.3 million at the high school and $14.8 million at the grade/junior high school, additional consideration will need to occur with the intention of prioritizing facility project work, reducing project costs, and/or conducting selected facility project work in phases over years.

At the upcoming May 29th Board of Education special meeting, the District plans to further review and prioritize the preliminary facility renovations, additions, and associated costs.

A PowerPoint presentation of the schematic design is available on the District website at www.hscud5.org, under the tab “Master Facility Planning”. The District will continue to provide updates on its master facility planning on its website, under the tab “Master Facility Planning”. The Henry-Senachwine Board of Education will continue to meet monthly and welcomes public attendance at the meetings.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Miller
